Why this role matters
The Data Scientist will guide our engineering team to architect and build the intelligence layer of GradWIN - shaping the algorithms, data pipelines, and AI foundations that power personalised student pathways, recommendation engines and career readiness models. This is not a back-office analytics role. It is a core product role with big impact. You'll collaborate with founders in L.A and Australia, engineers and designers to ensure GradWIN uses data ethically, securely, and meaningfully to support student success and wellbeing.

What you'll do
Data Strategy & Architecture
What you'll bring
Must-Have
  • Contribute to GradWIN's early data strategy, ensuring privacy, scalability and ethical design
  • Design data models that support personalised student pathways and recommendations
  • Establish processes for collecting, storing and structuring data securely
Machine Learning & AI Development
  • Assist the team with production ready models
  • Evaluate model performance and continuously improve outputs
Data Engineering and Infrastructure
  • Work with engineering to implement ETL pipelines and data governance standards
  • Ensure compliance with privacy, security and responsible AI frameworks
  • Review the implementation of monitoring tools that track data quality and model drift
Product Collaboration
  • Work with the Product Owner to transform insights into product features
  • Partner with UI/UX designers to ensure models power helpful, safe, human-centred experiences
  • Help define scope for any additional AI enabled features
Analytics & Insights
  • Build dashboards, reports and metrics to support founders, product and partnerships
  • Translate complex data into simple, actionable insights for students, employers and universities
  • Use experimentation frameworks (A/B tests, cohort analysis) to guide product decisions
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer
  • Expertise in Python, SQL, and ML libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn)
  • Experience architecting data models from scratch (bonus for startup experience)
  • Ability to build product-ready models and collaborate with software engineers
  • Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Strong understanding of data privacy, model fairness, and ethical AI design
Nice-to-Have
  • Experience in early-stage startup environments
  • Exposure to edtech, talent tech, health tech, HR tech, or similar mission-driven sectors
  • Understanding of student journeys, skills, taxonomies, or employability frameworks
  • Experience building recommendation systems or multi-sided platform models
  • Exposure to Natural Language Processing (NLP) for sentiment/engagement insights
