GradWIN
Career change

How to change careers without starting over.

The fear is almost always the same: that changing direction means going back to the beginning, on a beginner's salary, next to people ten years younger.

Can I change careers without starting over?

Often, yes. Changing careers doesn't mean your previous experience disappears. Skills such as leadership, communication, project delivery, analysis and industry knowledge may transfer across roles and industries. GradWIN starts by recognising what you already bring, then helps you explore possible career directions and identify what's actually missing.

What usually carries across

Capability travels further than job titles do. The things people are hired for in a new field are frequently the things they already do well in the old one.

  • Leading people, and being accountable when it goes wrong
  • Explaining complicated things to people who don't share your background
  • Delivering work to a deadline with real consequences
  • Analysis, judgement and prioritising under pressure
  • Deep knowledge of an industry, its customers and its constraints

What usually doesn't — and that's the honest part

A new field has its own tools, vocabulary, regulation and standards of proof. That is a real learning curve, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The useful question is narrow: which of those things do you actually need for the direction you want, and which are assumed rather than required?

An example

A nurse unit manager moving towards health service operations already runs rosters, budgets, escalation and safety reporting. What is genuinely new is likely to be the reporting tooling and the commercial framing — not managing people or handling pressure. The change is narrower than it feels from the outside.

How GradWIN approaches it

Recognise first: build the picture of what you have already done. Prove second: evidence capability against criteria that were set before anything was claimed. Develop what's actually missing: only after the first two steps, and only where there is a real gap. If GradWIN hasn't seen something yet, that is unknown — not missing.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my seniority if I change fields?+
Not automatically. Seniority is career capital; industry tenure is context. A change of context does not reset the level you work at, although the language and standards of the new field take time to learn.
What if my experience isn't on my résumé?+
Most of it isn't. Recognition starts with what you tell GradWIN, including work, projects and responsibilities that never made it onto a page.
Is a new qualification the only way in?+
Sometimes further study is genuinely required, particularly in regulated fields. Often it isn't, and the real requirement is evidence of specific capability.
